Inquests

The team of criminal barristers at Linenhall Chambers has high levels of experience and expertise and a strong track record of achieving results for clients in coroners inquests.

Our barristers provide advice at all stages of the inquest process, including issues of disclosure, pre-inquest reviews and advocacy at the inquest, for a range of clients in this highly specialised and emotive area of law.

The barristers at Linenhall Chambers work closely with instructing solicitors across England and Wales as well as taking instructions direct from clients and public authorities.

Clients include bereaved families of the deceased, individuals being called as witnesses as well as people potentially subject to criticism in an inquest. The Linenhall team acts extensively for public authorities made party to the inquest such as local authorities, police forces and other emergency services, health authorities, GPs, doctors and other medical staff.

Our team of barristers represents clients across England and Wales due to their highly specialised experience in inquests, both with and without a jury. They frequently represent clients in Chester and Cheshire, the wider North West, Mid and North Wales and the borders.

The team at Linenhall Chambers exercise tact and sensitivity in the conduct of their professional work understanding the complexities and emotions involved in inquests. Cases are treated as fact finding, rather than adversarial, exercises to establish what has happened including the medical cause of death, how, when and where the death took place and drawing conclusions from the evidence gathered including from experts and witnesses.

Every inquest is different, and our barristers understand that it is critical to take the time to gain a deep understanding of the case in order to provide both the right legal advice and, critically, the emotional support needed by the client, witnesses, families and other involved parties. The conduct of cases is tailored and adjusted according to the needs of the client and the particular sensitivities of the case.

Specific areas of expertise include inquests with and without a jury, deaths involving road traffic accidents and Article 2 inquests where a person has died whilst under the care or protection of the state or whilst in custody.
