Owen Edwards of Linenhall Chambers prosecuted in the case of Alesha Ahmed at Southwark Crown Court on the 16th November 2012. Alesha Ahmed had admitted taking part in an organised armed robbery at her parents’ home in 2010. Following her arrest she told the police that she had witnessed her parents murdering her sister Shafilea in 2003. Her evidence was to form a cornerstone of their subsequent conviction for Shafilea’s honour killing.
Mr Justice Irwin described her case as an extraordinary and terrifying story. The prosecution and defence described the case as a truly exceptional sentencing exercise. Miss Ahmed received a suspended sentence in what the judge described as a case for mercy.
