James Coutts of Linenhall Chambers was led by Michael Jones KC, CPS Cardiff, in the prosecution of Jamie Mitchell for the murder of his one-time friend and brother to his girlfriend.

The defendant was unanimously convicted of taking a kitchen knife from his bedroom after a window was smashed and going out of the house and prowling around Buckley, before happening on his victim, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He brandished the knife and chased his victim into a locked alleyway, where he cornered him and stabbed him once to the chest, before fleeing the scene and leaving him to die.

The defendant was sentenced to a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years, with the judge referring to it as a cowardly attack by a pretty inadequate young man.

Gordon Cole KC and Duncan Bould, both of Linenhall Chambers represented the defendant at trial.
