Caroline Rees KC and James Coutts of Linenhall Chambers successfully prosecuted Michael and Kerry Ives for the murder of their two-year-old grandchild Ethan. The trial at Mold Crown Court lasted six weeks and involved the presentation of a significant amount of detailed expert medical evidence. The case attracted huge publicity given the nature of the offending. Ethan’s mother Shannon Ives was also successfully prosecuted for an offence of allowing a child to die. All three defendants were also convicted of neglect.

The jury were excused from further jury duty for life given the harrowing nature of some of the evidence. The defendants will be sentenced on 3rd October 2025.

All defendants were represented by counsel from Linenhall Chambers. David Elias KC leading Simon Rogers represented Michael Ives. Owen Edwards KC leading Simon Mintz represented Kerry Ives. Gordon Cole KC leading Anna Pope represented Shannon Ives. The defendants were also represented by Gamlins Law and Edward Hughes solicitors.

Mr Justice Griffiths commended all counsel and their legal teams at the conclusion of the trial for their excellent skill and efforts in conducting the trial.
