Linenhall Chambers statement in support of the CBA’S No Returns policy

In support of the Criminal Bar Association and the vote on “No Returns” by fellow members of the Bar, Linenhall Chambers’ Criminal Team will no longer be accepting returns in the Crown Court on publicly funded defence cases from 11th April 2022.

‘No Returns’ means refusing to accept instructions to appear at any hearing where another advocate has already been instructed. In practice, ‘No Returns’ will stop the convention of covering for colleagues on cases where the court has double booked them, usually with insufficient time to adequately prepare within regular working hours.

This will allow the Criminal Team to focus entirely on their own work. The continuity of representation will aid our Barristers in achieving the best results for our clients.

Linenhall Chambers remains committed to retaining the Legal Services Commission’s Quality Mark for the Bar. The Head of Chambers and Heads of the Criminal Team will continue to monitor the quality of service and members of Linenhall Chambers continue to comply with the Bar Standards Board’s Code of Conduct for Barristers.
