Pensioner Thomas Dunn received a sentence of life imprisonment at Chester Crown Court on 17th November 2023 following his conviction for murder. Owen Edwards KC leading Nardeen Nemat prosecuted the case before HHJ Everett.

Mr Dunn, who was represented by Peter Wright KC, murdered a fellow resident at a supported accommodation block at Sandbach. The victim Royston Costello was a much-loved retired army engineer who lived with his wife in a neighbouring flat. Mr Dunn had armed himself with a spade and waited for an opportunity to enter Mr Costello’s flat when he was alone. He committed what was described as a cowardly attack upon his victim as he slept.

The case was originally adjourned for trial to consider issues of mental capacity. A sentence of life imprisonment with a minimum period of 17 years 6 months was passed.
